UK Plans Faster Alignment with EU Rules Under New Legislation

(MENAFN) The British government is reportedly preparing new legislation that would allow parts of European Union regulations to be adopted more quickly, without requiring a full parliamentary vote each time changes are made, according to reports.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is said to support the proposal, which would introduce a system of “dynamic alignment” with selected EU standards. The goal is to strengthen trade relations and reduce costs for businesses operating between the UK and the EU.

Under the plan, when the European Union updates rules in areas such as food safety, agriculture, or product standards, the UK would be able to incorporate those updates through secondary legislation rather than requiring separate primary parliamentary approval each time.

Officials argue that this approach is designed to reduce administrative burdens that have increased since the UK left the EU, making cross-border trade simpler and less expensive. They also suggest it could benefit consumers by lowering prices through reduced regulatory friction.

According to reports, government representatives have stressed that Parliament would still retain oversight of major agreements and broader legislative frameworks, even if routine regulatory updates are handled more efficiently under the new system.

However, opposition figures have expressed concern that such a mechanism could reduce parliamentary scrutiny and weaken democratic oversight of rule adoption.

The proposal is being developed ahead of an upcoming UK-EU summit expected this summer, where both sides are anticipated to discuss deeper cooperation on trade, energy, and security following earlier agreements in these areas.
